Zoom on the Slovakian ecosystem

Building the Foundations for Data Spaces in Slovakia – Martina Le Gall Maláková, IIC

Slovakia is making steady progress in digitalization and AI, while the adoption of data spaces remains cautious. During an EONA-X Data Dialogue, Martina Le Gall Maláková from the Industry Innovation Cluster (IIC) gave an overview of the Slovakian ecosystem, highlighting current challenges, opportunities and projects putting data spaces into practice.

As businesses increasingly invest in digital tools, automation and AI, data spaces offer an opportunity to strengthen trusted data sharing and connect Slovak stakeholders to the wider European ecosystem.

Understanding the Challenges of Data-Space Adoption

The adoption of data spaces in Slovakia is still cautious, with concerns around intellectual property, unclear benefits and limited incentives. Martina highlighted the need for secure technical solutions, clear legal frameworks, reliable connectors and a better understanding of the value that data spaces can bring.

Connecting Slovak initiatives to Common European Data Spaces can help address these challenges while creating opportunities for collaboration and innovation across borders.

From Projects to Practical Experience

Several projects are already helping build this experience. REBUILT explored data sharing in the construction sector, including Digital Product Passports, while STICS (funded by the European Union through NextGenerationEU, under Slovakia’s Recovery and Resilience Plan.) is developing an interoperable data-space foundation based on the open-source Eclipse Dataspace Components. Both projects illustrate the practical challenges of interoperability, data standards and trusted data sharing.
Mobi-X provides a concrete mobility example. Bringing together Slovak Lines, Turancar, EONA-X and IIC, the project explores how secure and sovereign data sharing can improve transfer connections, passenger experience and multimodal services between Slovakia and Vienna.

Connecting Slovakia to the European Data-Space Ecosystem

These projects demonstrate how practical use cases can help build trust and experience around data spaces. By connecting Slovak stakeholders to the wider European ecosystem, they also open the door to new forms of collaboration and data-driven innovation.
