What is UIC?
UIC is the global technical cooperation organization for the railway sector, working to promote efficient, safe, and sustainable rail transport. It supports its members in addressing the challenges of mobility, innovation, ecological transition, and regulatory change. Through international cooperation, the sharing of expertise, and the production of standardized solutions for the sector, it contributes to the development of common solutions for the future of rail transport.
Some figures
Globally, railways total 1.17 million km of track, generated 3.8 trillion (3,800 billion) passenger-km in 2023, and transported 12 trillion (12,000 billion) ton-km of freight in 2023.

Rail multimodality for improved sustainable mobility
UIC is involved in the entire data value chain: defining specifications, formats, and data exchange standards; designing and deploying support platform solutions to enable end-to-end data harmonization and interoperability.
UIC's interest in joining EONA-X can be summarized as follows:
Reliable and interoperable data sharing at European level: EONA-X provides a secure and sovereign framework for breaking down data silos; the UIC can accelerate harmonized data exchanges between operators, infrastructure managers, and players in the travel ecosystem.
A seamless journey facilitated by data: by harmonizing standards and practices in the railway sector, UIC helps to ensure data consistency and usability throughout the entire journey.
Interoperable industrialized ticketing and passenger rights: drawing on the capabilities of the UIC (e.g., ETCD and real-time exchange platforms), EONA-X can develop interoperable ticketing and data exchange between different stakeholders.
Large-scale, controlled AI: a governed data space enables access to higher-quality data for AI use cases (disruption prediction, anomaly detection, customer support, connection optimization) while maintaining sovereignty, security, and compliance.
