I see dataspaces like the new tool

“I see data spaces like the  new tool where companies share the data they want to share on the conditions they want to put on the market. Just the opposite of a data lake”, said AmadeusJean-François Cases at the European Data Value Forum held today at Ljubljana (Slovenia).

Today’s data infrastructures are focused on data sovereignty. Data spaces were described as “an umbrella term corresponding to any ecosystem of data models, datasets, ontologies, data sharing contracts and specialized management services, together with soft competences around it” (Insight Centre’s Edward Curry).

Every participant agreed that data spaces were drivers of the digital transformation in Europe. “Common European Data Spaces can contribute to tackle societal challenges such as climate change, health, mobility, etc,” said European Commission DG CNECT’s Matthias Kuom. And a progression is expected from 33 Zettabytes (enough storage for 30b of 4K movies or 7.5 trillion mp3 songs) of data produced in 2018 up to 175 Zettabytes in 2025. In this sense the European Data Strategy is betting on this modernization: the value of the data economy is expected to climb from EUR301b (2.4% of EU GDP) in 2018 up to EUR829b (5.8% of EU GDP) in 2025.
